Athlète à l’entraînement dans une salle sombreNutrition

Do you really need to have your protein right after training?

The “anabolic window” was long presented as a race against the clock. What actually matters comes down to one word: consistency.

The myth

For years, the advice was to drink your shake within thirty minutes of your last set, or “waste” the session. That urgency fuelled a lot of anxiety — and plenty of shakers gulped down in the changing room.

What matters more

Your total intake across the day matters far more than the exact timing of one serving. A steady intake, spread out regularly, session or not, gets the job done.

So the real question isn't “what minute” but “can I keep this up every day”. A lukewarm shake an hour after your shower beats a perfectly-timed one every third day.

In practice

The simplest approach is to tie your servings to moments that happen every day: breakfast, lunch, or right after training. If your session falls far from a meal, a post-workout shake still earns its place — not for the minute, but because it's one less thing to think about afterwards.

The takeaway

Consistency over weeks beats precision within an hour. It's less dramatic, but it's what shows in the end.
